School Readiness Impact Grants

As part of its School Readiness impact area, United Way of Greater Charlottesville funds local early childhood care and education through its School Readiness Impact Grants. Providers and partner organizations can receive grants in two ways: a Special Project Grant for projects that increase childcare capacity (open now with no deadline), and/or the traditional School Readiness Impact Grant, supporting the fuller range of access, quality, and workforce goals. The next School Readiness Impact Grant cycle will begin accepting applications in Winter 2027.

There's real excitement building around this work right now — from providers, from families, and from partners across our region. Every project we fund means more children gaining access to high-quality early learning, and that impact ripples out to strengthen the whole community.

Grant Pathways

Special Project Grant: Increasing Capacity

Dedicated to projects that increase childcare capacity — opening a new classroom or site, licensing upgrades, or hiring the staff needed to open new slots. Partner organizations can apply with systems-level work that directly grows regional capacity. Applications are short, paired with a brief video, and accepted on a rolling basis—no deadline to wait for.

Traditional Impact Grant

Our full grant cycle supports the broader range of School Readiness goals — access, program quality, and workforce stability — for both ECCE providers and partner organizations. This grant opens for applications in Winter 2027 on our usual annual cycle.

Not Sure Which Track Fits?

If you apply for a Special Project and your idea isn’t selected, you don’t need to start over. We’ll automatically carry your information forward for consideration in the succeeding Impact Grant cycle.
