Head Start/Early Head Start

At the United Way of Greater Charlottesville, we believe every child deserves a strong start. Through our regional coalition, we are bringing high-quality Head Start and Early Head Start services back to Central Virginia—offering comprehensive early learning, no-cost health screenings, and dedicated family support from birth to age five. By partnering with local schools and community providers, we’re not just preparing children for kindergarten; we’re empowering families and building a foundation for a lifetime of success.

Head Start Greater Charlottesville Collaborative

Head Start and Early Head Start programs support the comprehensive development of children from birth to age 5, in centers, childcare partner locations, and in their own homes, in a variety of ways.

Early Learning: Teachers facilitate individualized learning experiences to promote children’s readiness for school and beyond. Through planned and spontaneous instruction,  relationships with adults, and play, children grow in language and literacy, early math and science concepts, and social and emotional development.

Health: Children receive health and development screenings, nutritious meals, oral health and mental health support. Programs connect families with medical, dental, and mental health services, and ensure that children are receiving the services they need.

Family well-being: Parents and families are supported in achieving their own goals, such as housing stability, continuing education, and financial security. Programs support and strengthen parent-child relationships and engage families around children’s learning and development.

Head Start’s authorizing purpose is to promote the school readiness of young children. School Readiness means children are prepared for school, families are supporting their children’s learning, and schools are ready as children transition into kindergarten.

Here’s Why You Should Choose Head Start:

  • Quality Learning: Promotes school readiness with a focus on language, cognitive, and pre-literacy skills.
  • No Cost Care: Includes free diapers, wipes, formula, and meals.
  • Health Screenings: Comprehensive health and development assessments provided.
  • Mental Wellness Support: For both children and families.
  • Family Support: Access to family services and educational resources.
  • Kindergarten Readiness: Ensures children are prepared for the next step in their education.
  • Better Social Skills: Improves social and emotional skills, leading to better impulse control and fewer behavior issues.
  • Higher Education Success: Alumni are more likely to graduate high school, attend college, and have longer, healthier lives.
