Earlier this year, United Way of Greater Charlottesville and the Anne & Gene Worrell Foundation teamed up to introduce the FY25 School Readiness Impact Grants program. These grants awarded $100,000 to early childhood care and education providers throughout the Greater Charlottesville area, which helped create an estimated 102 new slots for children and families in need of childcare.
TamYon Williams, owner and founder of Tam’s Toddler Town Childcare, was one of the recipients of an FY25 School Readiness Impact Grant. We interviewed her about her experience as an entrepreneur and early childcare provider and how the grant has impacter her business.

Could you share a little bit about your background and how you ended up running a childcare center?
TamYon Williams: Yes, I’d be happy to share! I’ve been in the childcare business for 4 years now. During the pandemic, I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur but wasn’t sure what path to take. At the time, I kept seeing people post on Facebook saying, “They want us to work, but all the childcares are closed!”
For me, my perspective was a little different. I didn’t want my son going to daycare because he has cerebral palsy, and I was afraid someone might not treat him right or understand his needs. That’s when the idea clicked—to start my own daycare. From there, my best friend Princess Long and I put our minds together and went through the long process of becoming voluntarily registered so we could truly learn the ins and outs of childcare. Eventually, we moved up to being a licensed family day home, and then became a subsidy vendor!
What have been some of the biggest challenges when it comes to getting Tam’s Toddler Town Childcare up and running?
TamYon Williams: The biggest challenge I faced was finding the money to get the business up and running. When unemployment benefits started coming in during the pandemic, I decided to use that to invest in my dream. That funding helped me cover the costs for the first year. Like they always say—it takes money to make money—and I chose to bet on myself.
What have been some of the best moments along your journey with Tam’s Toddler Town?
TamYon Williams: For me, some of the very best moments in childcare are the little things that make all the hard work worth it. Like when a child who was shy or crying on their first day finally starts smiling and running in the door. Or when they have that lightbulb moment—recognizing their letters, counting to 10, or writing their name for the first time. One of the most rewarding parts is helping children overcome challenges. Whether it’s a speech delay, big emotions or special needs, seeing their progress and confidence grow is something I’ll never forget. And honestly, the daily laughter, curiosity, and joy these kids bring into my life… those are the moments that remind me why I chose this path.
What value do you think Tam’s Toddler Town is adding to our community?
TamYon Williams: Our childcare adds value to the community in so many ways. We provide families with peace of mind, knowing their children are in a safe, loving, and educational environment while they work and provide for their families. For many parents, having access to affordable and reliable childcare isn’t just a convenience—it’s the only way they’re able to keep their jobs or pursue their goals.
We also focus on quality early learning, helping children build the foundation they need for school and life—social skills, problem-solving, fine motor development, literacy, and so much more. By supporting children at such a young age, we’re setting up the next generation for success.
Another way we add value is by being inclusive and understanding of children with different needs. Families know they can trust us to care for their children with patience, compassion, and individualized support.
Your business earned a UWGC School Readiness Impact Grant. Could you share what your reaction was to receiving the grant?
TamYon Williams: When I got the news that I received the grant, I was honestly in tears. Every sacrifice, every long day, and every moment of doubt suddenly felt worth it. For me, this grant isn’t just about the money—it’s about the confirmation that someone truly believes in the work I’m doing for children and families.
This support means more opportunities, more resources, and more love poured into the kids I care for every single day. And I have to say—sometimes it feels like family day homes get overlooked simply because we don’t have 30+ kids like a center. But we matter too. The impact we make in small, intimate settings is just as valuable, and this grant is proof of that. We are small but we are mighty!
What are your plans for (or what have you already done with) the grant funds?
TamYon Williams: With the grant, we’ve been able to invest in brand new supplies, updated equipment, and even show recognition to our incredible staff who make everything possible. We also made a few exciting updates to better support our little ones—especially our new babies—so they can learn and grow in the best environment possible.
What is your favorite part about working in childcare?
TamYon Williams: My favorite part about working in childcare is being able to make a difference in a child’s life every single day. Watching them grow, learn, and hit milestones—whether it’s saying a new word, mastering a skill, or simply gaining confidence—is the most rewarding feeling.
I also love the relationships that form. The children become like family, and seeing the joy on their faces when they walk in the door reminds me why I do what I do. Knowing that parents trust me with their most precious gift is an honor I don’t take lightly. At the end of the day, it’s the laughter, hugs, curiosity, and little moments that make this work so special.
Finally, How Do You Make Sure to Take Care of Yourself After Caring for Little ones all day?
TamYon Williams: I love being with my family at the end of the day—hearing about their day at school, enjoying some bonding time, or just relaxing in bed watching the shows I’ve missed during the week. And you’ll find me on Amazon picking out new educational materials for my daycare, always thinking about how to make learning even more fun for the kids!
