Brittany Hughes received a United Way early education grant in the 2023-2024 Financial Year through our Mixed Delivery program. This support enabled her to send her two sons to daycare while she finished earning her degree and, in turn, set herself up for stable to provide for her family. Hear from her directly below.
My name is Brittany Hughes, and I am a 36-year-old mother to two boys. As a single parent, everything falls on your shoulders. Childcare is hard to find and almost impossible to afford out of pocket.

The preschool scholarships that both of my sons have received through United Way are a lifesaver. They have allowed my children to be in a safe environment where I know they are being looked after.
They have also enabled me to work while earning my bachelor’s degree in business administration. I currently manage rental properties and hope to expand my career into bookkeeping once I graduate.
As a donor, you may not always know who you’re helping, but I can tell you: single parents struggle, and families with both parents struggle. Sometimes people just need a little help.
Thankfully, my children are thriving. We have a roof over our heads, I just made the dean’s list two years in a row, and I am filled with so much hope.
