Give back to our community on the 2026 MLK Day of Service. This year, we are partnering with Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital to host a community kit-building project on Monday, January 19, 2026 at Jackson P. Burley Middle School from 10a.m. to 12p.m. This event is also supported by our community partners Albemarle County and Shenandoah Joe Coffee Roasters.
Click here register to be a volunteer! Can’t make it in person? Click here to donate funds to support the project. Donations will go towards supplies and/or sustenance to help volunteers build more kits. You can also email Caroline Emerson at cemerson@unitedwaycville.org to discuss more ways to help!
We will be assembling 1,000+ hygiene and winter warmth kits for those in need. Kits will then be distributed by The Haven and Salvation Army Charlottesville to individuals and families in need throughout our community. This volunteer project is open to all, including kids! We will have child-focused activities and encourage volunteers to bring their little ones to expose them to the spirit of community service and helping others.
Volunteers will also get to hear from guest speakers including Mayor Juandiego Wade about how to best support our unhoused neighbors.
We are excited to be offering this volunteer project to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy through collective community action. We hope this project brings together community members and organizations through volunteerism. We are excited to make a local impact while building stronger connections and having important discussions with each other.
We hope you join us!
