We are happy to announce that we are busy preparing to open for this year’s tax season. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we are amending protocols and procedures to ensure that our clients and preparers are able to have a comfortable, safe, and efficient experience.

We have started taking appointments! However, we are prioritizing those in our community that are most impacted by COVID 19 and in the most need. What does that mean?

We will initially serve those households whose annual household income is less than

$57,000, AND, who have basic returns, e.g., no home ownership, no itemizing deductions, no investment income, no IRA distributions, etc. We may ask questions to discern the housed meets the following:

  • Do not own my home
  • Do not itemize deductions
  • Do not have any investment income to report
  • Do not have a military return
  • Do not have income from another country
  • Do not have a spouse or children in another country
  • Married with joint income less than $57,000 per year
  • Single with no children and annual income is less than $40,000 per year, AND, no investments, itemizing,
  • Single with children and my income is less than $45,000 per year

When and if we are able to extend our criteria, we will begin to make appointments for residents with moderate income and will reflect that change on this website.

Due to changes stemming from the Covid19 pandemic, we will only have one site located at 407 East Water Street in Downtown Charlottesville. This site will be for drop-off and intake purposes only. Returns will still be prepared by certified IRS tax preparers working virtually with clients by phone once the preparer receives the intake documents. The preparer will contact the client by phone to review the intake documents.

This process will take longer than in past years and clients will have a second but brief appointment to sign and pick up their completed tax return.

We greatly appreciate your patience as we undertake this program with the necessary modifications to keep everyone safe during this challenging time.

Want to file your own taxes but don’t want to pay? is under new operation. A partnership among the national United Way office, the IRS, and TaxSlayer, it is free to use and file online!

Visit and select “By Myself”. You will enter your contact information to receive an email with the link to the free software. There is also an option if you want to file with assistance.

Cancellations for evening appointments will be made by noon of that day. Cancellations for Friday and Saturday morning appointments will be made by 6pm the night before.
